Daisy was resting comfortably outside underneath the warm, lateafternoon sun as she sat atop the small blanket spread out over the field of lush, green grass across the street from her dormitory. Spread out across her lap as she sat with her legs stretched out in front of her and crossed at the ankles was the volume of text that she occupied herself with. Ronnie reached over and snatched up the book, flipping it around so thathe could get a look at the cover. “Hey!” Daisy exclaimed as she watched the book get lifted from her legs. All the while she remained in her seated position, leaning back against the pair of outstretched arms that braced her upper body up from the rear. “What is this?” Ronnie asked, reading over the front panel. “LewisCarroll?” “C’mon. Give it back,” Simon said from the position that he occupied onthe blanket. Ronnie gave him a twisted look of disappointment and tossed the bookback over to Daisy. She brought her hands up and clasped hold of it, snatching it out of the air while delivering an infuriated look in his direction. “So does anybody got any ideas about what we’re doing for dinner?”Ronnie asked them. “It’s getting late and I don’t feel like any last minute guess work.” “How about that Italian place just off campus?” Daisy said, prying openher book again and relocating the page that she was on. “They’re always good.” Simon expelled a loud sigh of irritation that succeeded in gaining him and icy dagger laced stare from Daisy. “You got a problem?” “Yeah. Did you ever consider mixing it up once in a while?” “Well I suppose we could always go in for another night of take-out onyour dorm room floor,” she replied. “We could always compromise,” Ronnie chimed in. “How about Italiantake-out?” “Do you actually have a suggestion to make, or were you just planning onbeing an ass the entire night?” Simon said. “Yeah. I’d suggest that the both of you take a big, wet bite out of myass but I don’t see how that’s going to solve anybody’s problem.” Daisy slammed her book closed and shoved it into her backpack. “Screwboth of you,” she said. She collected a few other things before rising up to her feet. “I’ve got leftovers in my room anyway.” “Wouldn’t by any chance be pasta, would it?” Simon called out to herback. Daisy’s only reply was to flip him the finger as she kept up her walk. “Nice going,” Ronnie said. “We probably could have gotten her toshare.” Simon turned a look of disgust toward his roommate just before mimickingDaisy’s motion of collecting his things and rising to his feet. “Asshole,” he muttered under his breath as he stepped across the blanketand went on his way. Later that evening Ronnie returned to his dormitory with a belly full ofthe campus cafeteria cuisine. Upon stepping through the doorway of his dorm room he was greeted to a great big helping of silent emptiness. Had it not been for the memory of the verbal sparring match that had transpired between them earlier that day he would have surely acted on the impulse prompting him to make a go for the phone and give her room a ring. No doubt if he did she would hardly be in a mood to entertain… Read the rest of Trisected
